Hamilton Type Festival April 30, 2008
We here at Mixed Media are happy to be involved with the first-ever Hamilton Type Festival. With events throughout the month of May, you may want to circle the calendar, cancel your plans and call-in sick to work as type is about to take over your life. Co-presented by Ampersand Ampersand and H Magazine.
Here are the events so far:
Ghost Signs of Hamilton - This photographic exhibition documenting some of Hamilton’s ghost signs is making a return appearance after showing at the Art Gallery of Hamilton last year. These sometimes vast, painted murals were once ubiquitous in many industrialized cities. Most have faded with time, become obscured or completely hidden by adjacent construction, or been lost completely through demolition. Very occasionally they reappear, if only briefly. Silent Auction is support of ACO Hamilton Branch. Opens Friday May 9 at Mixed Media as part of the James North Art Crawl. Showing until June 6.
Helvetica - Hamilton premiere - Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. The film looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.Thursday, May 22nd, 7pm and 9pm at Staircase Theatre ($7.00 tickets available in advance at Mixed Media)
Signs of Downtown Hamilton walking tour - From Pagoda Chop Suey to Zack’s Furniture, neon to hand-painted - Downtown Hamilton has a wealth of historic signage that not only showcases the past but also add to the current urban fabric of downtown revival. Meet at Wellington Park, King & Wellington St. Tour wraps up with coffee and discussion at HIStory+HERitage, 165 James St. N. Sunday, May 25th 1-3pm (free to attend).
